Ideally, air duct cleaning will only need to be done periodically. If you feel your air ducts are gathering dust and debris at an unusually quick rate, we have some tips you can use to keep them clean for longer. Not only will this allow you to reduce your HVAC preventative maintenance bill, but it will also keep other vital components of your HVAC system functioning for a longer period.
Keep Home Dust-Free
It’s impossible to keep all the dust, dirt and dander out of our homes, but making a conscious effort to do so can keep our HVAC ducts much cleaner over the long haul. Be sure to keep up with vacuuming, sweeping and mopping to reduce the chances of these substances being sucked into your air ducts. If you want an added layer of protection, you could even consider purchasing an air purifier.
Change Air Filters
If we could give one HVAC tip to every homeowner, it would be to always remember to change your air filters a minimum of once a year. As our filters get coated with dust and other debris, the chances of that debris slipping past and into our air ducts goes up. If you have several pets, you may even want to consider swapping out your filters more often. Some filters only last around three months, so to maintain your good indoor air quality, be sure you aren’t using a dirty, ineffective filter for an extended time.
Keep the Air Vents Open
Are your air vents closed? If so, your air ducts are likely gathering dirt and debris faster than they otherwise would. With that in mind, you should keep them open as much as possible. With the heat of spring and summer approaching, this will keep your home as cool as possible as an added bonus. You should also ensure that no furniture or décor is blocking your vents unless absolutely necessary. Just like a closed vent, an obstructed vent can create airflow issues and start collecting debris as a result.
