Tips for Choosing the Right Mini Window Air Conditioner

May 24, 2021

If you are starting to feel the effects of June, you are not alone. The heat and humidity are starting to ramp up, and our homes should be an escape from that. Unfortunately, sometimes, our air conditioning units don’t have quite enough strength to keep us cool once summer arrives. This is most likely a sign that HVAC maintenanceis needed, but you may have considered purchasing a window air conditioner for some instant relief.  Here are a few tips for choosing the right option for your home!

Selecting the Right Window Air Conditioner

The price of window air conditioners can vary between roughly $200 and $1,000. That is a massive range, and it exists for a few reasons. For starters, there are several sizes available designed to cool specific square footage. Energy efficiency also plays a significant factor in the cost. Cost also varies greatly depending on the features the unit is stocked with out of the box. Here are several features you may want to consider seeking out depending on your specific needs and preferences:

  • Google Assistant or Alexa compatibility
  • Multiple fan adjustment levels
  • Programmable timer
  • Extra-long cord
  • Filter sensors and washable/ reusable filters
  • Specific temperature control
  • Remote control
  • Venting options for airflow control

To properly cool and dehumidify a room, you’ll need to be sure to choose the proper power rating for your window air conditioner. Be sure to check the British thermal unit (BTU) rating on any window air conditioner before purchasing it. Here is a guide you can use to help you select the right size. Be sure to refer to the specific unit’s listed ratings for more specific guidance. Additionally, remember that the size and weight of the unit will increase as its BTU rating increases.

  • up to 350 sq. ft.: 8,000 BTU
  • 350-400 sq. ft.: 9,000 BTU
  • 400-450 sq. ft.: 10,000 BTU
  • 450-550 sq. ft.: 12,000 BTU
  • 550-700 sq. ft.:14,000 BTU

"Will-Air had provided a thorough written estimate to solve the issues outlined above as part of a prior visit. The projected price for a turn-key solution was greater than our available budget. Will-Air offered an incremental plan that would address the issues in a logical and sequential manner. This first phase required the removal of problematic ductwork in the attic. This difficult job was effectively completed on-time and within budget with minimum disruption to our home and family."

Tom came out on the same day I called and did a detailed analysis of the problem with the fan on our gas furnace, which turned out to be a defective circuit board. Had to order the replacement board, but Tom was able to hotwire the fan so that we had heat in the house that chilly evening. The next day, Rob (the owner) called with an estimate for replacing the bad board. It sounded reasonable, but I mentioned to him that I had seen an alternate board on that looked like it might also work. He was unfamiliar with that particular part, but after we hung up, he took the initiative to confirm that that alternate part would in fact work, which saved me more than $100 for the board. Rob then came out a few hours later (even earlier than he had promised) to install the board and check out the whole furnace, including the add-on humidifier, to make sure everything was working correctly. Great, fast service. I would certainly hire them again.
