Earth Day may have passed, but there’s no time like the present to begin making small lifestyle changes to help the environment. Energy conservation is especially important during the summer, as the A/C gets turned up to full blast and many people have more free time to spend at home. Here’s how to conserve energy during the summer.
Schedule HVAC Maintenance
We use copious amounts of energy in our daily lives, and it’s important to ensure we aren’t using any more than we need to. It’s important to schedule regular HVAC maintenance so you know your system is functioning smoothly and efficiently. You’ll also want to check your windows and doors for any cracks, leaks, or wear. When cool air is able to escape and warm air is able to intrude, your HVAC unit is forced to work harder than necessary to keep temperatures down. Remember to keep doors and windows closed and consider repairs if you notice drafts surrounding the area even when they’re shut up tight.
Turn the A/C Off
With that said, there’s also a lot of benefit to switching the air conditioning off and throwing the shutters wide open. As allergy season comes to a close and summer begins, you’re free to enjoy one of the most mild times of the year. If the temperature outside is within five degrees of your desired indoor climate, shut off the A/C and open the windows and doors to get some fresh air circulating. There’s no reason to spend more money on your energy bill to keep the HVAC system running when your backyard is already a comfortable 72 degrees. If your household is empty most of the day, consider scheduling your A/C to run only when you’re home or just before you arrive. This way you’re not keeping a cool house for nothing but the empty air for hours on end while still being able to enjoy a controlled climate at the end of the day. Evenings are also naturally cooler than midday, so your HVAC system won’t need to work as hard to get the temperature down. Another key note: always remember to shut off your A/C before you leave on a trip to avoid wasting days’ worth of energy and cash!
Use the Sunlight
Summer marks the beginning of long days and short nights, so it’s the perfect time to keep the lights off as much as possible. Open the curtains and let the sunshine in to lighten your electricity bill. Consider adjusting your sleep schedule to take full advantage of the plentiful daylight hours and sleep with the sun– you might be surprised at how much of a difference this makes for your physical health and mental wellbeing.
